Edgar Degas and the Female Nude

Degas shed new light on the female form in his time. Putting forth a new way of representing the female form which changed the way other artists would later on portray.

The female nude is a staple in the world of Art History. It has been done so many times that in these days we don’t really pay much attention to it unless it is done in a way that is either hyper-realistic or goes beyond the usual figure and is abstracted so much that one does not even recognize that they are looking at a female nude.

But the female nude was something that Degas mastered and made his own. Degas was considered an abstract artist in his time. Which looking at the previous style of art, realism, Degas was an abstract artist. Degas was not painting these women to look realistic. His brushstrokes are loose and the figures are not completely recognizable. Therefore, having it be “abstracted”. Today, we would call this style impressionism.

He set the forefront for later artists when it comes to abstracting the nude figure. Instead of painting the models for their details and main features he was painting them solely for their form. Degas made the nude female look androgynous. He took the female form and made it a bit masculine at times. He was painting real women the way that they were. Portraying every shape and celebrating it through his art.
