Knowing and not doing

There’s an old Chinese proverb that says:

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now”.

Knowing what to do but not doing anything about it is an absolute energy waster. It took time to read and absorb what you thought was relevant but people tend to wait for the best time to test and validate what they have just learnt.

The biggest problem is fear of action or fear of doing the right action. There is never going to be a time where you have a perfect balance between action and the knowledge on how to execute. Every plan you execute is going to be based on a general idea of what you know and believe is the appropriate next step. The only true test is the doing. The market will soon tell you if what you put out to the universe works or not. Don’t be afraid if the universe gives you a hard cold slap in the face back. It’s going to be ok. People have 3 second attention spans. They will soon forget what an arse you made of yourself. If you are not a consistent arse then you should be ok. If you are then that is an article for another day!

Its very rare in the entrepreneurial world that you are going to be performing a task which creates total understanding before taking control. Brain surgery or flying a plane are a few tasks which require a dedication to deep understanding and mastery before taking the reins. Even then a doctor or pilot faces a situation which requires course correction during flight based on conditions. Training and experience help but the execution and testing feedback is the best and only way to gauge whether what you did works.

The material available out there is so vast. We are drowning in information but are thirsty for knowledge. You can read, review, reflect as much as you like but if you don’t get out there and execute you really haven’t learnt anything yet. My advice — pick one and try that. If it doesn’t work pick another and try that next.

All these things affect the doing mindset, the mindset of action. You can start the doing without any of these things in place.

You have enough knowledge today. Start executing your idea. Let the market and the responses from it be your guide as to whether it works or not.
