4 Reasons Why Education Should Be More Like Yoga

Creating a personalized experience for students is not impossible.

As I lingered in child’s pose, taking a much-needed break after a challenging series of standing poses, the instructor reminded me again to take it easy. Our bodies are all different, she remarked.

Despite a decade of somewhat consistently practicing yoga, I am still not very flexible. I often need to make the suggested adjustments as I flow through a practice. I appreciate the (pun intended) flexibility that yoga offers. If I can’t do a pose, then I just take it down a notch and try a variation instead.

It is widely understood that in yoga, you do you. Yogis are often advised to respect the limits of their minds and bodies. To accept where they are and where they can go within their practices.

It is widely understood that in education, you do whatever the teacher tells you. Students are advised to follow the flow of the class and do whatever it takes to move with their class of peers.

Yoga is highly individualized. Education is highly institutionalized. Yoga respects the needs of the person. Education respects the needs of the system.

Yogis move at the pace that works for their bodies. Students move at the pace that works for their teachers. Education can, and should, take a more personalized and authentic approach to learning.
