What Is Medium Good For?

When You’re Lucky to Get 10% of Your Followers to Read Your Stuff

I have a little over 500 followers. If I got even 10% of the views on each of my stories, I’d get 50 views per story. I bet you can already guess… I often don’t get that many views. I know I’m not unique. Larger writers have commented and even complained about how few views they get. I also know that we smaller writers have it even worse since we don’t even have their large bank of followers to hope to look at most of our stuff.

When you hear about a larger writer with over 10 thousand followers who has many stories that don’t get more than a couple of hundred views, it makes you wonder why we’re all striving so hard for that follower count? Well, there are a few reasons but getting paid well enough to make a living on this platform probably isn’t one of them.

This isn’t meant to be a downer of a story, so let’s talk a little bit about the benefits we gain from Medium. The first benefit is that it’s a fantastic place to start out as a writer and earn some degree of money while you grow and learn as a writer.

It can teach you all sorts of things about how to be a successful writer. From learning how to make this platform work from all the helpful advice you can get from other writers willing to share.

One thing that people really tend to focus on is the community. We’re not just one big happy family, there are disagreements and the like. That said, this is a place where people come to read and enjoy articles and stories. It’s also a place where many of us come to write those stories and articles.

Medium is a great place to find a community of writers who can help you grow as a writer. It’s also a great place to find supportive readers who can often give you the boost of confidence needed to keep going. This value shouldn’t be underestimated. Knowing that there are people who are rooting for you and enjoy your work is fantastic. I know I appreciate just how kind and supportive some of the people who follow me are.
